Plenty of folks have dreamed of quitting a job that was stressful and making them unhappy, but few actually do it. Fewer still happen to be successful indie folk artists who have recently enjoyed a commercial breakthrough after years as a critics' darling. However, that's just what Kathleen Edwards did in 2014, setting aside her career in music after the success of 2012's Voyageur to open a coffee shop in Stittsville, Ontario, Canada. After Maren Morris persuaded Edwards to co-write a song with her, "Good Woman," for her album Girl, Edwards began dipping her toes back into music, and 2020's Total Freedom is her first record since taking a sabbatical from selling coffee.

Singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards has different kinds of traveling in mind on her album Voyageur. There is the geographic kind, of course, but also the journey through the seasons of nature, and, especially, the trip a love affair represents from its beginning to end. Edwards seems to be in transit right from the start, at least in terms of intentions, with the folk-pop leadoff track proclaiming, "I'm movin' to America," before the singer quickly adds, "It's an empty threat." Still, that's a good representation of the themes of the record, as Edwards explores troubled feelings, often expressing dissatisfaction with a lover she is simultaneously obsessed with and unhappy about.

Kathleen Edwards' 2005 album Back to Me was the sort of record that grows and reveals new secrets each time you gave it a listen, so it's tempting not to trust immediate impressions after three spins of her next set, 2008's Asking for Flowers. But if one has to leap to a relative snap judgment, Edwards' new record sounds just as strong as its fine predecessor, and shows that she is gaining strength and confidence as a songwriter, qualities she hardly lacked before.

Judging from the songs on Kathleen Edwards' sophomore album, Back to Me, this is one gal who's had some unpleasant run-ins with Cupid over the years, and she's not afraid to talk about 'em. Back to Me comes charging out of the gate with "In State," in which a woman spits with no small amount of venom that she's glad her outlaw boyfriend has been sent up the river for 20 years, and the album doesn't get a whole lot more optimistic about affairs of the heart as it goes along.

Teeming with roots and with alternative country oozing from every note, Kathleen Edwards could easily be compared to fellow Canadian Sarah Harmer, but there is a natural difference in their approaches.
