Like clockwork, Swedish stoner rockers GREENLEAF spread their concentrated sludgy energy to disciples of the genre by releasing Echoes From A Mass in 2021, the successor to their 2018 epic, Hear The Rivers. The album opener, “Tides”, immediately draws the listener into a swirl of guitar driven soundscapes, while Arvid Hällagård’s remarkable voice merges with hypnotizing background vocals, ceremonially inviting the listener into a heavy reverie. Floating hypnotic grooves set the stage for the compelling yet chilling “Needle In My Eye” — with its incisive, driving drums and roaring riffs, the record’s third song accumulates piece by piece into a modern rock standout, taking the mind by storm.

The same question arises three years after the beautiful Rise Above The Meadow: Why are GREENLEAF not packing the biggest venues just like Queens Of The Stone Age? Well, it can`t be the fault of “Let It Out!”, the heavenly groovy opener of that album's follow up, Hear The Rivers. The rest of the album also turns out to be quite the mesmerizing bag of tricks that seizes the Swedish Stoner sound and enriches it with so many wonderful things, like the unforgettable riff-o-rama „Good Ol`Goat“ or the slow soulfeeder „We Are The Pawns“. An absolute gem of an album that is best kept in the family – which is why former GREENLEAF- and Dozer drummer Karl Daniel Lidén (Craft, Bloodbath, Crippled Black Phoenix amongst others) produced it. The bearded dudes will hit European roads in November with their seventh album Hear The Rivers, and it`s actually quite neat we don´t have to travel to anonymous stadiums to enjoy their live magic.

memorable - is something that can't be defined, learned, or bought. Call it talent, magic, or whatever you want, but Greenleaf’s got it. A super group of the underground rock scene, the band was formed sometime in late 1999/early 2000 by guitarist Tommi Holappa (Dozer), drummer Daniel Liden (Demon Cleaner and the drummer on DOZER's "Through the Eyes of Heathens," and currently in AND The Machine Said Behold!), and engineer/ bassist Bengt Bäcke.

Like any side project -- and, make no mistake, the members of Sweden's Greenleaf have their fingers in way too many pies for this to constitute anything else -- 2003's Secret Alphabets album can't disguise the partial commitment of those involved in its creation, which, incidentally, occurred more than two years after the band's inauspicious stoner rock debut. Don't get us wrong, Secret Alphabets is a very solid, surprisingly straightforward hard rock album, but the competent songwriting present in energetic rockers like "10,000 Years of Revolution" and "Witchcraft Tonight," as well as mellower, psychedelic, and space rock-tinged excursions such as "The Combination," "One More Year," and "Masterplan," never really attain elevated orbits of inspiration.
