Baby I’m-A Want You is Bread’s best album, showcasing its soft and hard sides (yes, Bread had a hard side) at their respective peaks. “Mother Freedom,” with its crunchy James Griffin guitar solo, and the superb soft rocker “Baby I’m-A Want You” made a brilliant opening which the rest of the album had a hard time matching. The songs range from wistful sentimentality (“Diary”) to spirited protest (“This Isn’t What the Government,” a poor man’s “Taxman” with an anti-war slant). The high points outnumber the flat spots, and the playing is very polished (with unexpected hard rock flourishes on “Dream Lady”), but this is still a ’70s period piece. Reissued in 1996.

The Concerti Grossi Opus 6 by Haendel are the “natural” descendants of a pallet of famous composers, “from the glorious tradition of a Torelli and above all a Corelli, whose Concerti Grossi Opus 6 were first published in Amsterdam in 1714, even if they were first played in Rome in 1682,” explains Marc Vignal, who adds: “In England, the Opus 2 by Albinoni first appeared in 1709, the Opus 3 by Vivaldi no doubt in 1714, the Opus 6 by Corelli in 1715, and the Opus 3 by Geminiani towards 1732. Handel’s Op 3 Concerti grossi was his first published set of concertos, although scholars have regarded the level of his personal involvement in John Walsh’s 1734 edition with suspicion. Richard Egarr suggests that Handel might have had more of a hand in the compilation of Op 3 than hitherto identified. Fresh speculation is a healthy opportunity to reconsider matters but the truly significant aspect of this recording is the new attention brought to Handel’s charming music.

No organ concertos without oratorios!
To exaggerate somewhat, Handel‘s organ concertos owe their existence to this simple formula. What can justify this statement? Subsequent to his physical and mental breakdown in 1737, Handel turned almost exclusively to the composition of oratorios. In order to offer his audiences something new, the composer thought up some extra musical attractions for his oratorio performances. And he finally came up with additional improvisations on the organ. Thus a new genre saw the light of day in the musical world both during the première of his oratorio Deborah, on March 17, 1733 and during the repeat of Esther: the organ concerto was born. Charles Burney‘s remarks with regard to these events, in which he describes the birth of the genre of the organ concerto, are nothing less than euphoric. Not only does he praise the prolificness of the pieces and the ease with which they can be followed, but also Handel‘s precise performance of "improvised fugues" and "chromatic pieces". The great success of these innovative interludes, which at first were of a mostly improvisatory character, induced Handel to regularly include organ concertos in his oratorio performances from 1735 onwards.
