The time for the SACD release all Pink Floyd fans have coveted — Animals in 5.1 surround and stereo — is here. Another classic Pink Floyd title receives the multichannel reissue treatment and Acoustic Sounds and Analogue Productions is here to proudly handle exclusive distribution of this monumental disc. The SACD also of course includes a stunning stereo mix. And as this is a hybrid disc, the album is of course also playable on a standard CD player.
The SACD features the 2018 remix of the iconic 1977 Pink Floyd album for the first time, by long-time producer/engineer James Guthrie. Animals is a concept album, focusing on the social-political conditions of mid-1970s Britain, and was a change from the style of the band's earlier work. The album was developed from a collection of unrelated songs into a concept which describes the apparent social and moral decay of society, likening the human condition to that of animals. Taking inspiration from George Orwell's Animal Farm, the album depicts the different classes of people as animals with pigs being at the top of the social chain, dropping down to the sheep as the mindless herd following what they are told, with dogs as the business bosses getting fat on the money and power they hold over the other. Although it's been a long time since 1977, the narrative of the album still resonates today as our social and economic situation mirrors that of the time.

By 1977 England was in the throes of punk, a musical revolution that held hugely successful "dinosaur" rock groups in contempt. So Animals, the album Pink Floyd released that year, found the band as musically stripped down as they'd ever been. The overabundance of soundscapes, ethereal synths and lush textures of the past gave way to a leaner, more guitar-driven Floyd. Yet thematically, Waters and co. still reached for the sky. Inspired in part by George Orwell's classic novel, "Animal Farm," Animals divides humans into three categories--dogs, pigs and sheep--and features each classification in song. The dogs are merciless opportunists, grasping for success at any price; the pigs are pathetic, self-righteous tyrants; and the sheep are the mindless followers, being used by the dogs and pigs.

Anyone who knew anything about Pink Floyd knew that a dance band they were not, so this profit-taking, holiday-season compilation, courtesy of Columbia Records, was intended ironically. Arguably the quintessential album band, Pink Floyd is not well served by compilations, especially one on which four parts of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" are edited together and there's a re-recording of "Money." Stick to the full-length versions.

Regarded by many as one of their finest live performances, at least of the post-Roger Waters era, Pink Floyd's appearance at 1990's Knebworth Festival was buoyed by a casual sense of camaraderie and freshness. Having taken a much-needed break after two years of globe-trotting in service of 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason, the one-off show in rural Hertfordshire marked the band's return to the stage. Considered to be the festival's headliners over fellow U.K. legends like Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Phil Collins, the Floyd dazzled nearly 120,000 fans with career bullet points like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and "Comfortably Numb" along with a more recent entry in David Gilmour's sonorous guitar showcase, "Sorrow." Even the band itself has been said to have felt a certain magic in their performance, which, until its inclusion on the mammoth 2019 Later Years box set, had only been available in bootleg form. This 2020 edition, remixed by Gilmour and engineer Andy Jackson, should help cement Knebworth's place in the group's expansive canon.
