We are in the year 1966, in the Soviet Union. While Shostakovich is enjoying the success of the world première of his Second Cello Concerto, the Georgian composer Sulkhan Tsintsadze is putting the finishing touches on his own new work. In their respective concertos, these two composers draw their own psychogram: a sombre landscape intermittently illuminated by rays of light, brightened up with a few prudent dabs of colour here and there.

Nothing is as it seems here. And everything seems futile here. Can one say it any more briefly? Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15 remains a complete enigma for the observant listener. However, in an attempt to explain it, let us consider, for the time being, the few, straight facts: the work was composed between April and the end of July 1971, and is the last symphony to issue from Shostakovich’s pen. It was given its première in Moscow in 1972, under the direction of his son Maxim. Not much more can be said about the Symphony No. 15 that is clear and unambiguous, unless one chooses to describe the musical processes in the sense of a musicological analysis of the structure, in order to present formal criteria or the course of the work, for example. Of course, these parameters offer no more than a point of orientation for an assessment of the contents or an interpretation of the work.

Dmitry Shostakovich´s eleventh symphony in G minor op. 103 titled “The Year 1905” was composed in the years 1956 and 1957. In the article “ Reflecting on the course of my life” (published in Sovetskaja muzyka 9/1956) the composer wrote this about the work “At the moment I’m working on the eleventh symphony which will be finished this winter. The theme for the symphony is the Revolution of 1905. I feel personally very close to this period in the history of our country.

Not until later on, in his posthumously published memoirs, did Shostakovich provide a personal insight into his Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65, which he completed on September 9, 1943 in only two months’ time, following a short, yet agonisingly dry creative period: “The Seventh and the Eighth are my ‘Requiem’.” At the time, his first comments on the new work were very different, and (as was usual during Stalin’s regime, one should add) meaningless: “This work mirrors my thoughts and feelings following the joyous reports on the first victories of the Red Army.” For sure … After all, it would be hard to come up with another 20th-century symphony that soundsas inscrutable and sadly fateful as Shostakovich’s Eighth.

Not just his artistic future was at stake. Dimitri Shostakovich’s survival was hanging by a silk thread following the notorious article in Pravda “Chaos versus music”, which was published in 1936. An example was made of his second opera “Lady Macbeth of Mzensk”, which was highly criticized. In doing so, willing officials were implementing Stalin’s guidelines with regard to the socialistic music of the future. This was not the way it should sound.

The last three symphonies by Pjotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky are classic examples of the Russian symphonic tradition. However, although these works definitely contain Russian elements, the critics who claim that Tchaikovsky was first influenced and moulded by the German and French styles are certainly correct. The truly Russian style was not so much developed by Tchaikovsky as by the composers of the so-called “Mighty Handful” (or the “Mighty Five”).
