Recorded over two days in April 1954 with two different groups, Walkin' should not be confused with the Steamin'/Relaxin'/Workin'/Cookin' quartet of albums Miles Davis cut in similar fashion in 1956. In contrast to those contract-fulfilling blowing sessions, the music on Walkin', documenting Davis at one of his early pieces, is much more consistent and remarkably focused—making it one of the best of his '50s Prestige albums. Culled from two previously released 10-inch records (two of the three cuts from Miles Davis Quintet comprise the second half of Walkin', while both of the cuts from Miles Davis All-Star Sextet make up the first half), the lineup differences here aren't particularly dramatic.

Like the Mona Lisa for the Louvre, Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert is a showcase for ECM. With 4 million copies sold, it is not only the biggest success in the label's history but also the best-selling piano solo album! And many of those who bought this live recording, recorded on January 24, 1975 in the Cologne Opera House, did not yet own a jazz album in their record collection. Yet the world phenomenon had the most unfavourable conditions that evening. The American pianist was exhausted from a long car journey, had back pain and found another cheap grand piano on stage instead of the Bösendorfer he had ordered. "I think Keith played so well precisely because of this mediocre piano," said producer Manfred Eicher later.

Since 2003, Gerald Clayton has evolved his formalist perspective on post-bop, straight-ahead jazz into an increasingly nuanced balance of its populist and progressive streams. 2020's Happening: Live at the Village Vanguard, a Grammy-nominated essay in progressive formalism, plays with the iconic postures of jazz's late golden age while stringently advancing the tradition with fluid next-gen skills and harmonic reach; 2022's Bells on Sand, expansively flashes aspects of modern classical composition, contemplative '70s jazz chords and moods, and the trippy, who-knows-what? approach of Charles Lloyd (with whom Clayton has played over the past decade-plus) with light, imagistic flair. As pianist/musical director Out Of/Into, a quintet of current Blue Note all-stars, he continues to advance Happenings' progressive/formal bop conceptions with the organic cool that comes with multi-generational remove.
