Tyshawn Sorey is celebrated for his virtuosity and an extraordinary ability to blend composition and improvisation in his work. He has performed internationally with his own ensembles, as well as artists such as John Zorn, Vijay Iyer, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Wadada Leo Smith, Marilyn Crispell, Claire Chase, Jason Moran, Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, Myra Melford and many others.

Drummer and composer Tyshawn Sorey, winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Music, continues to build his recorded legacy by rearranging the work of other songwriters. Sorey executes his unique vision on The Susceptible Now by rearranging the music of McCoy Tyner, Joni Mitchell with Charles Mingus, Brad Mehldau and Vividry. Working again in a trio with pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Harish Raghavan, Sorey begins Tyner's "Peresina" with a recasting of the source material's final eight bars, to set what he calls the "zazen-like immersive ethos of the entire song." Diehl starts slow on this more introspective take, ignoring the fast runs and comped chords that Tyner began with, instead opting for more space and quietly stated, multi-note themes around which Sorey keeps an idiosyncratic time on cymbals. After an abrupt rhythm change halfway through, Sorey becomes more aggressive, alternating between polyrhythms that drive Diehl into new improvisatory heights. Although this four-song voyage is fascinating throughout, what's most eye-opening is Sorey's reworking of neo-soul group Vividry's soft, tuneful love song, "Your Good Lies." Their three-minute track is transformed into a novel 26-minute unfolding that bears only a tangential resemblance. Diehl beautifully carries the melody, playing both single notes and chordal harmonies before repeating an insistent keyboard figure that references the rhythm of Vividry's version. He then plays the original melody in evenly-spaced bursts of forceful chords. Raghavan anchors a steady tempo while Sorey, who never indulges in solos, hovers in the background with a subtle touch—especially on the cymbal taps—to add structure and forward momentum. It is a masterful performance that ends on a quiet, bittersweet note, confirming Sorey's seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of conception, discovery, and virtuosity.
