•Mother Earth emerged in the summer of 1991 out of some sessions that Acid Jazz boss Eddie Piller produced for his friend Bunny, which comprised of a load of Bunny's mates jamming over samples and rhythms put together by him and Eddie. Out of these sessions came not only the debut album Stoned Woman but also the nucleus of the band. The album was released in May 1992 and after a slow start it really took off after a page review in the NME. The beats and wah-wah grooves of Theme From Riot on 103rd Street perfectly conjured up the images of New York fire escapes and cops chasing robbers, while the title track Stoned Woman became the crowd stopper at the bands live shows. •An EP Mr Freedom followed, with all four tracks appearing on this album. Paul Weller sings backing vocals on the title track, while Help Me Up was inspired by a plea from Keyboard player Bryn Barklam and Time of the Future was liked so much that it was reconfigured to become the band's autumn 1993 single. •The following album The People Tree was a masterpiece with tracks like Find It showing the band's hard aggressive edge, whilst Institution Man has a space-rock feel. The album features two stand out tracks, both ballads and both absolutely beautiful; Jesse became the single, but it could also easily have been the Curtis Mayfield inspired Apple Green. The album was packaged with a stunning photo by legendary rock photographer Gered Mankovitz. •The bands final studio album was the aptly titled You Have Been Watching...and was recorded as the band started to fall apart. Despite this it contained some classic songs such as the singles (Never Gonna Get) To War and the supremely laid back Compare Yourself. •Of all the bands on Acid Jazz, Mother Earth should have been the one who really made the big time. They had a critically lauded first album and a second that was brim-full of beautiful melodies, whilst their lead singer Matt Deighton was an obvious candidate for stardom. In the end it was destined not to be. - artistdirect.com
