Harry Miller, for anyone who doesn't know (and up until a few years back I wasn't aware of him either) was a double bassist, one of the South African musicians who made Britain his home in the '60s. His recorded output was phenominal but there were very few releases under his own name during his lifetime - this collection brings those 5 albums together on 3CDs.

The jazz-fusion bassist and former Soft Machine member's second solo album was first released in 1977. Featuring performances from some of the leading lights in British fusion, including the saxophonists Elton Dean, Mark Charig, and Gary Windo, Hopper's compositions are a mix of progressive rock, such as the title track, and the lyricism of pieces like "The Lonely Sea and the Sky." A misnomer, this is not the Eddie Davis Trio featuring Shirley Scott Complete Recordings as the CD title wants us to believe. It's actually the other way around i.e. the Shirley Scott Trio, consisting of Scott on organ (who was 24 when these recordings were made), George Duvivier on bass and Arthur Edgehill on drums, serving as a solid foundation for Jaws to blow his magic. And of course this is by no means a 'complete recordings' reissue. To be precise, this CD includes 2 LPs, Roulette R 52019, SR 52019 and Roost RLP 2227 in their entirety. This is very common in jazz releases, as in so many sessions there is no 'leader' per se, and for marketing purposes record labels issued the same session under a different leader. Add to this the reissue craze of the last 25 years or so and you are stumped! These are an archivist's rantings you may say and you will be right, as the music is priceless.

Norman Granz's idea to match Zoot Sims' lyrical, swinging tenor sax with Johnny Mandel's equally arresting compositions was a masterful one. Sims' tart, alternately lush and furious solos were wonderfully spotlighted on such tunes as "Cinnamon and Cloves," "Emily" and "Zoot." The six-tune session, recently issued on CD, also contains effective piano solos from Mike Wofford. The date's tour-de-force was its final selection, the wonderful "Low Life," which Sims probed, illuminated and ultimately redefined via his solo. ~ Allmusic

Tryo is three-men-band from Valparaiso, Chile and "Viajes" (in English "Travels" - isn't it?) is their fifth album. Usually this band has been electric trio (el. guitar, el. bass/cello + drums) and therefore the music of them has been more usual (not bad) because of the soundspectrum. But this record "Viajes" is surely my personal favourite album released by Tryo - on this record they play mainly acoustic but very beautiful-sounding instruments, for example vibes, marimba, darbukka, also cello and acoustic guitar. The music is very gentle and full of loveliness with pleasant melodic lines - mostly instrumental, the last tune includes vocals in Spanish. My personal favourite "travels" are maybe "Viajes", "Nimios", "Ambientes" and "Exploraciones" I, II, III. Very beautiful listening!
