Justin Hayward (vocals), Mike Batt (conductor), The London Philharmonic OrchestraThis is a beautiful collection and selection of songs by the voice of the Moody Blues who delivers interpretations in his own signature style. Call it a vanity album if you choose; this is clearly a showcase for his voice. His plaintive vocals are crystal clear and immaculate throughout, with many a number sending a shiver up the spine as only an emotional Justin Hayward vocal can. I especially enjoyed his version of "MacArthur Park" (a 60's throwback which I've always liked and found fascinating). JH's rendition, I feel, surpasses the original. I played Justin's for my mother (for whom I'd bought Richard Harris' album with my allowance as a child) and she liked Justin's rendition better (a true compliment, if you ask me!). The orchestral version of his worldwide hit, "Forever Autumn" is stunning and just as heart-rending as its counterpart. Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" is also an outstanding cut. Not many artists would dare try to cover "Stairway to Heaven" or "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and Justin does these classic mainstays of rock radio justice. He also does "Man of the World" by original Fleetwood Mac member, Peter Green, and as a Beatles' fan, "Blackbird" was a happy addition for me. Now, if only Justin would do "Classic Blue, Part II" and perhaps try "If You Could Read My Mind" and "The Last Time I Saw Her" both by Gordon Lightfoot (my other favorite artist and one who, I understand, Mr.Hayward is also a fan of); "Aubrey" by Bread; and perhaps, the Beatles "She's Leaving Home", there would be the start of a second gem of a classic album. Talk about emotional vocals. What do you say, Justin? Your fans would relish another compliation in this genre. It's such a departure for the frontman of a seminal band of the'60's that is still filling the venues today. It would be another stage for this multi-talented musician to explore.
