Начало истории этой группы уводит нас в ранние 60-е на северо-запад Англии, где Джон Лис (р. 13 января 1947) и Стюарт "Вулли" Волстенхольм (р. 15 апреля 1947), будучи учениками олдхэмской художественной школы организовали проект "Sorcerers", позднее переименованный в "Keepers". Примерно в это же время Лес Холройд (р. 12 марта 1948) и Мел Притчард (р. 20 января 1948) выступали под вывеской "Heart and soul and the wickeds". В 1966-м обе команды объединились и начали выступать под именем "Blues keepers". Спустя год дело было поставлено на профессиональную основу, а коллектив приобрел новое название – "Barclay James harvest". Под патронажем менеджера группы Джона Кроутера музыканты отправились в старинное местечко "Preston House", где в спартанской обстановке проводили время за репетициями и сочинением материала.
